CIMA Entry Routes

Direct from school ....

You don’t need a degree to start your CIMA studies.
CIMA is an alternative qualification to university that is valued by employers worldwide.
It also gives you a great opportunity to learn while you earn – many employers will fund your CIMA studies.
Ever wondered who decides on the price per song on iTunes and how ? Or, why festival tickets work out more expensive for one day than for the whole weekend ? CIMA members play key roles in some of the world's most exciting organisations.
Certificate in business accounting
You start by studying the certificate in business accounting, which will give you a solid grounding in the fundamentals of management accounting.
You can study the certificate as a qualification in its own right or as a stepping stone to the professional qualification, which leads to the title of Chartered Management Accountant.

CIMA straight from school
  Sarah Young
Role: Assistant to group accountant, Deep Sea Leisure
Education: A levels in accountancy and law, Llandrillo College
Studying CIMA straight from school has given me the opportunity to secure an amazing role, in a dynamic multi-national company, without the ongoing financial burden of student debt. I have managed to gain four years' experience and progress to a higher level role in the time it would have taken me to complete a degree.

Undergraduate or graduate

CIMA is a natural progression for people with finance and business degrees.
It is also a business relevant qualification that complements degrees in other areas.
Management accountants don’t fit the stereotype of number crunchers and bean counters.
When there’s an important business decision to be made, there’s a cool headed management accountant in the thick of things.
You may be eligible for exemptions from some CIMA papers. Find out more about exemptions.
Visit CIMA career fairs

Alain Rose: the Royal Bank of Scotland Group
Role: finance graduate
Education: MA (Hons) in business studies and accountancy, University of Edinburgh
Graduated in 2007
‘The strategic side of business interests me’
I currently work in RBS Group treasury, for the cash management team. I really enjoy the camaraderie in the team, and also the responsibility which comes with helping to manage the group’s cash position on a daily basis. I also like the fact that it is not a typical finance role, which is helping to widen my knowledge and experience.
RBS have been very supportive during my CIMA studies. I have had all my courses and study materials paid for, as well as exam entry fees. I have also been granted study leave, no matter which team I was working in at the time.

Working ...

Already work in finance and want a professional qualification?
Or are you considering a complete career change?
Studying CIMA could be the best career decision you make.
Do you already hold a relevant qualification?
If you already hold a relevant degree or professional qualification, you may be eligible for exemptions from the certificate in business accounting and the professional qualification.
If you have no formal education in business or finance, you will start by studying the certificate in business accounting, which will give you a solid grounding in the fundamentals of management accounting.
You can study it as a qualification in its own right or as a stepping stone to the professional qualification.

Ian Mair ACMA, Tesco
Role: Central Finance Director
‘I really wanted to have a business qualification, not just a finance qualification. I came into finance a bit later, it’s not something I studied as a degree, so I wanted a qualification that would give me a broad business perspective.
CIMA has really helped give me the confidence to make key business decisions and advise others of the financial implications.

AAT student ...

CIMA is the natural progression beyond AAT.
If you hold a recognised AAT accounting qualification, you can build your skills and your career prospects with the CIMA professional qualification.
How is CIMA different ?
Most accountancy qualifications train people for private practice, working on external audit and tax issues. CIMA is different. CIMA is rooted in real world business needs, preparing people like you to take your place in the action packed world of international business.
How much will it cost and where can I study?
You can attend classes part-time, during the evening or at weekends, or if you prefer to study from home you can do so via distance learning.
CIMA at a glance has all the critical information you will need on how much it costs, where you can study and how long it takes to complete the CIMA qualification.

Charlotte Holmes: Siemens
Role: finance officer
Entry route: AAT Level 4 Diploma in Accounting
I decided to work my way through AAT and then to study CIMA in a work-based environment - gaining experience and knowledge in one go.
CIMA covers all areas of business management and is as much about people as finance. I knew this was the area of finance that I was interested in being a part of.

With an MBA ...

CIMA recognises MBA holders as future business leaders.
CIMA has developed an accelerated route into the CIMA professional qualification for MBA holders.
